NATO allies are not into inviting Ukraine to NATO at the Washington Summit this summer.
The reluctance comes from the fear of the need to use Article 5 which is why NATO cannot invite a country at war. Ukraine, though, asks for a formal invitation which would show NATO’s support for the future.
The US and Germany are the most strongly opposed to the idea of inviting Ukraine to NATO, sticking to the stance they had during the previous summit in Vilnius.
Still, to show they continue to back Ukraine, the Allies are “planning for a greater NATO role in coordinating security assistance and training”, according to Jens Stoltenberg.
“None of these things may matter by July if Russia continues to gain ground and Ukraine looks in danger of losing the war — a prospect that has become all the more real with each month that Republicans in Congress continue to block a $60 billion aid package to Kyiv,” the article concludes.
In Brussels, Foreign Minister of Ukraine Kuleba stated the allies themselves had to decide on “the form and the content of the next step toward Ukraine’s membership in NATO”, but emphasized that Ukraine deserved an opportunity to become a NATO member, which should occur “sooner rather than later”.
Also, Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State, claimed that Ukraine will be in NATO in Brussels.
