Volodymyr Omelchenko, The Director of Energy Programs of the Razumkov Centre, which is the Ukrainian centre for economic and political studies, said that today, Ukraine has the second largest gas reserves in Europe after the Netherlands.

He also stated that Ukraine has reduced its gas consumption by almost half, and has thus become the world’s leader in reducing gas consumption.

“Ukraine, as odd as it may seem, is the world’s leader in reducing energy consumption. For example, in recent years, we have reduced the consumption of gas by half– up to 28 billion cubic meters,” Omelchenko said.

At the same time, he siad that the decrease in consumption was mainly due to a fall in GDP, not due to the introduction of energy-efficient measures.
