Ukraine’s Energy Minister discusses assistance to Ukraine’s energy sector with Japanese Ambassador

Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine Matsuda Kuninori.

The parties discussed the needs of the energy sector of Ukraine in view of the ongoing massive russian attacks on energy infrastructure, intensified on the eve of winter.

Mr. Ambassador stressed that Japan is ready to provide assistance to the Ukrainian energy sector, and a number of relevant decisions have already been made.

In particular, the Government of Japan allocates about USD 2.57 million for the purchase of generators and solar lanterns for Ukraine. In addition, in the framework of cooperation with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), an agreement was reached on supply of equipment for the restoration of Ukraine’s energy sector. The first stage of assistance from JICA provides for supply of 242 generators, which will be sent to Ukrainian energy companies.

German Galushchenko thanked Mr. Ambassador for such support, adding that the needs of the energy sector remain significant in view of the regular attacks of the enemy and the resulting large-scale destruction of energy infrastructure. An updated list of materials and equipment necessary for the restoration works was handed over to the Japanese side.

The parties also discussed the possibility of holding a separate meeting with representatives of Japanese companies, particularly from energy and related industries, to engage them in the process of restoration and reconstruction of the Ukrainian energy sector.

The parties also discussed possible cooperation between Japan and Ukraine in the area of gas supply.
