The fight against climate change is one of the most important global challenges facing the world today. Despite the war, Ukraine remains an active and important player in this process. This was stated by Ruslan Strilets, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, at a high-level event on the sidelines of the COP28, when he presented the country’s climate position.
Every year we witness global disasters caused by climate change. Just a few recent examples. The earthquake in Morocco had tragic consequences for more than 300,000 people. The floods in Libya killed more than 2,000 people.
All of these manifestations will be exacerbated not only by the refusal of certain countries to follow ambitious climate goals, but also by Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine. russia is undermining all the efforts of states that have been investing trillions of dollars for decades to achieve the global goal of the Paris Agreement.
“Today, as a country that has been subjected to unprovoked armed aggression, we are bringing the environmental dimension of the war into an independent area that requires a separate strategy to overcome. Our goal is to make Russia pay for all its crimes against the environment,” said Ruslan Strilets.
The Minister noted that following steps are being taken to achieve the above:
▪️ President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula;
▪️ The Environmental Declaration, which is based on the principles of the UN Charter and the resolutions of the UN General Assembly approved by the world;
▪️ Sanctions that will weaken Russia’s ability to conduct aggressive hostilities. And they are already working. -10% GDP growth in Russia, record budget deficit, the impossibility of obtaining certain technologies, in particular for the army, and a shortage of labour.
