Ukraine has received its first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States, as part of a pan-European effort to move away from Russian fossil fuels.
This was reported by the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, and the Financial Times.
Ukraine’s largest private energy company, DTEK, took the cargo across the Mediterranean Sea. The ship arrived at the Greek LNG terminal on Dec. 27, days before the end of a five-year agreement to transit Russian gas through Ukraine.
“Such supplies not only provide the region with a flexible and reliable source of energy, but also undermine Russia’s influence on our energy system,” said DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko.
Although about 40 percent of Europe’s LNG imports come from the United States, Ukraine had never purchased LNG directly until now.
DTEK said it had purchased a batch of about 100,000 cubic meters of natural gas. According to the National Operator of the Greek Gas Transportation System, the Ukrainian company will keep about a tenth of the cargo and the rest will be resold to Greek companies.
