Today, November 23, Ukraine and the whole world honor the memory of the victims of the Holodomors. Traditionally, on the fourth Saturday of November, candles are lit in the windows as a symbol of memory

The most tragic was the Holodomor of 1932-1933. The communist government confiscated all grain and any food supplies from every Ukrainian home. The famine took the lives of, according to various estimates, from 4.5 to 10 million Ukrainians.

The Soviet government did its utmost to deny the fact of the mass death of Ukrainians, as well as the settlement of extinct regions. But after Ukraine gained independence, archival documents were declassified.

This Holodomor was recognized as genocide of the Ukrainian people in 31 countries of the world.

This year, traditional memorial events will begin at 16:00 with a minute of silence. There will also be an all-Ukrainian action “Light a Candle”, when everyone will place a lit candle on their windowsill in memory of the victims.

Recall that PACE recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people. The document confirms that the former leadership of the USSR deliberately implemented the policy that led to the famine in Ukraine.
