On June 13, the United Nations General Assembly elected Ukraine to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the period 2019 to 2021, the permanent mission of Ukraine to the U.N. reported.

“Membership in ECOSOC will contribute to the implementation of the best international practices in the field of socio-economic reforms in Ukraine. We also intend to use more actively the UN potential in order to resolve the most challenging humanitarian issues,” said Volodymyr Yelchenko, Ukraine’s permanent representative to the U.N.

The ECOSOC is one of the six key U.N. bodies responsible for coordinating the activities of the organization and its specialized agencies in the economic, social and enviromental spheres. It is authorized to convene special meetings on humanitarian emergencies. It consists of 54 member states.

In 2019, the ECOSOC in Ukraine will focus on the development of an equal and inclusive society, including gender equality, strengthening social protection of people with disabilities, improving the humanitarian situation in conflict zones, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, and combating climate change.

Ukraine was last elected to the ECOSOC for the period of 2010 to 2012.

The decision of the U.N. was backed by 176 countries.
