The head of the NATO Secretary General’s office, Stian Jenssen, said that Ukraine can become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance by ceding part of its territories to Russia. Similar proposals and discussions have been heard for several months, in particular on the margins of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. MP, Deputy Chairman of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on National Security, Defense and Intelligence, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Ukraine to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Yehor Chernev said this today, August 16, on the air of the FREEDOM TV channel.
He noted that such proposals were heard, in particular, from the partners of Ukraine.
“They talked about the fact that perhaps it is worth considering the format, for example, the entry of Germany into NATO in 1955, when only part of Germany entered. But one must understand that these are still things that cannot be compared, there were really two Germanys with two different governments, with two different regimes. And, most importantly, neither one nor the other Germany claimed to conquer each other. We now have claims, a war, a hot phase. There is no reason to say that Russia will leave these territories tomorrow. Therefore, these are things that cannot be compared,” said Chernev.
The politician drew attention to the fact that Ukraine has repeatedly rejected such proposals as untenable and impossible.
“We do not trade our territories and we will not give up any territories for the sake of joining NATO. Ukraine should join NATO within the borders of 1991,” he emphasized.
Chernev is sure that Stian Jensen’s statement was not a provocation in order to check the reaction of the Russian Federation to such a proposal or anyone else.
“It seems to me that this is more of a broadcast of what is being discussed on the sidelines. Such thoughts or such discussions are circulating somewhere, but not at the official level yet,” the People’s Deputy believes.
He added that such statements are not in the hands of NATO itself.
Note that Stian Jenssen later apologized for his words and said that he should not have said that.
