Today, Ukraine celebrates National Flag Day.
Ceremonies are being held and flags flown across the nation. This year, the largest flag in Ukraine was raised in the city of Dnipro. The blue and gold national symbol is a record-breaking 12 by 18 meters large, and the flagpole stands at 72 meters tall.
“The State Flag of Ukraine is a sacred talisman, a symbol of the unity and invincibility of Ukrainian people,” President Petro Poroshenko said.
“Let the Ukrainian flag always rise in all corners of Ukraine in the name of celebration and victories. I sincerely congratulate the compatriots on the occasion of the Day of the National Flag of Ukraine,” Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman wrote.
National Flag Day was established after the signing of a presidential decree on August 23, 2004. At that time, Leonid Kuchma was Ukraine’s president.
Ukraine’s flag is described in Ukraine’s Constitution. It consists of two equally-sized horizontal bands of blue and yellow. The ratio of the width of the banner to its length is 2:3. The colors represent Ukraine’s golden fields of wheat and blue skies, mountains, and streams.
For the first time in the modern history, the flag was raised above the Verkhovna Rada building on August 24, 1991 on the day that Ukraine’s Declaration of Independence was adopted.
