U.S. Treasury Secretary John Bessent will pay an official visit to Kyiv this week for talks on economic support for Ukraine and U.S. access to rare earth metals, Bloomberg reports.
The meetings are scheduled against the backdrop of new initiatives by the Donald Trump administration aimed at strengthening US economic security. Washington is seeking to reduce its dependence on Chinese supplies of strategic materials, including rare earth metals, which are essential for the military, aviation, and technology industries.
During his visit, Bessent will hold talks with Ukrainian government officials on:
U.S. economic assistance to Ukraine in times of war
Prospects for cooperation in the field of rare earth metals mining
Reforms and improvement of the investment climate
The visit is expected to be a political signal of support for Ukraine and a demonstration of the US interest in a strategic partnership.
Earlier, Donald Trump announced his desire to conclude a $500 million deal with Ukraine on access to rare earth resources and natural gas in exchange for security guarantees in possible future negotiations on the war.
This visit could be the first official visit to Ukraine by a senior Trump administration official since he returned to power. The White House has not yet commented on the situation.
