New U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that the Trump administration’s goal is to end the war in Ukraine in a way that prevents future conflicts from reigniting.
In an interview with CBS Mornings, Rubio emphasized that Ukraine is bearing the highest cost in this war, including damage to its energy infrastructure, the loss of lives, and the displacement of millions of Ukrainians who have been forced to live abroad.
“The conflict must end, and U.S. policy is aimed at achieving this. We want to do everything possible to help it end.
We will work to ensure that this conflict concludes in a stable manner—not just ending temporarily, only to resume in two, three, or four years. We want to ensure lasting stability,” Rubio stated.
He added that “everyone should be very happy” that Donald Trump was elected president, as he seeks to “promote global peace and end these conflicts.”
It is worth noting that on January 21, Trump suggested that he might consider imposing additional sanctions on Russia if it refuses to negotiate an end to the war.
On his first day in office, Trump remarked that Vladimir Putin is “destroying Russia” by prolonging the war.
Putin, in turn, congratulated Trump on his inauguration and expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue regarding the war he initiated against Ukraine.
