Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has backed Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, who proposed that Poland’s child benefit program, known as 800 Plus, should apply only to Ukrainians who have jobs in Poland.

Tusk wrote about this on his Twitter account.

According to him, the government will urgently consider Trzaskowski’s proposal.

“The proposal of President Rafał Trzaskowski to pay 800 plus only to migrants, including Ukrainians who actually live, work and pay taxes in our country, will be urgently considered by the government. I support this,” the Polish Prime Minister said.

Recently, Trzaskowski advocated that Poland’s child benefit program, known as “800 Plus,” should apply only to Ukrainians who have jobs in Poland.

The mayor of Warsaw, who is also a presidential candidate, said that Poland should not make the mistake once made by other Western countries such as Germany or Sweden, to which, in his words, “it was simply profitable to come only for social benefits.”

The Family 500 Plus program was introduced by the Law and Justice government on April 1, 2016. According to it, families with dependent children were entitled to a child-rearing allowance of PLN 500 per child until the child reaches the age of 18, regardless of the family’s income.

Starting from January 1, 2024, the amount of this benefit will be PLN 800 per month per child.

Payments of PLN 800 apply to those Ukrainians who legally entered Poland from Ukraine after February 23, 2022. In mid-2024, Warsaw tightened the criteria for granting the allowance – a Ukrainian child was eligible for it, but only if he or she attended a Polish school or kindergarten.
