American President Donald Trump stated on Thursday, March 13, that he would impose a 200% tariff on all wines and other alcoholic products from European Union countries if the EU does not remove its tariff on whiskey.
He wrote about this on the social network TruthSocial.
Trump claimed that the European Union is “one of the most hostile and unlawful tax and tariff entities in the world, created with the sole purpose of taking advantage of the U.S., having just imposed a disgusting 50% tariff on whiskey.”
He warned that if this tariff “is not immediately removed,” the U.S. will “soon impose a 200% tariff on all wines, champagne, and alcoholic products originating from France and other EU-represented countries.”
“This will be great for the wine and champagne business in the U.S.,” he added.
As is known, Trump previously announced his intention to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum exports to the U.S. at a rate of 25%. These tariffs took effect on Wednesday, March 12.
In response, the European Commission stated that it would impose counter-tariffs on American goods worth 26 billion euros starting next month.
On March 13, Trump declared that the U.S. would respond to the EU’s countermeasures against his new 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum, increasing the risk of further escalation of a global trade war.
