U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he plans to speak with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, March 18.

He made this statement to journalists aboard Air Force One, Reuters reports.

Trump said he intends to discuss ending the war in Ukraine with the Russian leader.

“I will be speaking with President Putin on Tuesday. A lot of work has been done over the weekend,” he stated.

The American president expressed his desire to see “whether we can put an end to this war.”

“Maybe we can, maybe we can’t, but I think we have a very good chance,” Trump added.

When asked about territorial issues, Trump said they would be “talking about land” as well as “power plants.”

Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, recently visited Russia and met with Putin last week to discuss the U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire.

The Kremlin stated that “additional signals” were conveyed to Trump through Witkoff.

Trump himself previously said that the U.S. had a “very good and productive discussion” with the Kremlin leader. At that time, he mentioned that there was “a very good chance that this terrible, bloody war could finally end.”

On March 16, reports indicated that Witkoff believed the U.S. side could achieve progress in resolving Russia’s war against Ukraine in the coming weeks.
