U.S. President Donald Trump has once again threatened Canada and called for it to become the “dream 51st state” of the United States.
He made this statement on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Trump claimed that to eliminate tariffs, Canada should join the U.S.
“We pay hundreds of billions of dollars to SUBSIDIZE Canada. Why? There’s no reason. We don’t need anything they have,” he wrote.
According to Trump, the U.S. has unlimited energy, produces its own cars, and has more timber than it could ever use.
“Without these massive subsidies, Canada would cease to exist as a viable country. Harsh, but true! That’s why Canada should become our dream 51st state. Much lower taxes and much better military protection for the people of Canada—AND NO TARIFFS!” Trump added.
White House officials previously announced that President Trump had imposed 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada and 10% tariffs on Chinese products. In response, both Canada and Mexico introduced their own tariffs.
Even before taking office, Trump frequently joked about Canada being the “51st state of the U.S.” On January 8, he shared maps depicting Canada as part of the United States.
