U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation to declassify the Crossfire Hurricane case files, which relate to his campaign’s alleged ties to Russia in 2016.
The corresponding decree was published on the White House website on Tuesday, March 25.
Trump ordered “immediately” to declassify materials related to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation, which began in 2016 to try to find out whether members of Trump’s campaign had ties to Russia during the presidential election.
He emphasized in the decree that the investigation materials are no longer classified, except for those that have been redacted by the FBI or require protection under court orders or laws.
The US president emphasized that this decree does not apply to personal information or materials protected by law.
“Subject to the exceptions noted above, the Attorney General should immediately make the declassified materials described in this memorandum available to the public,” he added.
As you know, back in 2016, the Federal Bureau of Investigation began covert surveillance of the campaign headquarters of then US presidential candidate Trump, suspecting him of having ties to Russia.
In 2018, Trump, who was already President of the United States at the time, demanded that the Department of Justice find out whether the FBI’s interference in his campaign was politically motivated and also demanded that the FBI’s documents on surveillance of his campaign be made public.
In May 2023, US Department of Justice Special Prosecutor John Durham released a report on the results of a four-year investigation into the FBI’s actions in monitoring Trump’s campaign for possible ties to Russia.
