U.S. President Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of running for a third term in the White House, which is prohibited by the current U.S. Constitution.
He said this in an exclusive interview with NBC News.
The 47th President of the United States stated that there are methods for this and clarified that he is “not joking.” “A lot of people want me to do it,” Trump said, referring to his allies.
“But, I mean, I basically tell them that we have a long way ahead. You know, this is a very early stage of the administration,” Trump added.
When asked if he wants to serve another term, the U.S. president responded, “I like working.” “I am not joking. But I am not going to—it’s too early to think about it,” Trump said when asked to clarify.
When asked if he had been presented with plans that would allow him to run for a third term, Trump replied: “There are methods by which you can do it.”
In response to a question about a possible scenario in which Vice President J.D. Vance would run for office and then transfer the role to Trump, he replied that “this is one of the ways.” “But there are others,” Trump added. When asked to share another method, Trump simply answered, “No.”
Trump has previously commented on the possibility of running for a third term, though Republicans have taken these comments as jokes or as trolling of his critics.
The U.S. Constitution limits one person to serving as president for only two terms. Amending the Constitution to remove this restriction would be an extremely difficult task, requiring either two-thirds of Congress or two-thirds of the states to agree to convene a constitutional convention to propose changes. Either path would require ratification by three-quarters of the states.
More than half of Americans assume that Donald Trump will seek a third presidential term.
Republican Andy Ogles has already proposed changing the wording of the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution so that it would prohibit reelection for more than two consecutive terms but allow no more than three terms in total.
