Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed Canada’s intentions to respond to US tariffs after Donald Trump announced them on March 4.

This was reported by the CBC.

Trudeau said that the first task of the Canadian government is to prevent “unjustified tariffs” of the United States, but is preparing to retaliate against Trump if they are imposed.

“Canada will respond immediately and extremely strongly, as Canadians expect,” the prime minister said.

Canada is expected to renew its plan of action in response to Trump’s actions by imposing tariffs on $150 billion worth of U.S. goods as soon as the tariffs threatened by the U.S. president take effect.

“If tariffs are imposed, it’s going to be hard on Canadians and Canadian businesses – it’s also going to be hard on Americans and American businesses, and that’s what we try to get across the southern border at every opportunity,” Trudeau emphasized.

Trump has previously confirmed that he intends to go ahead with his plans to impose 25 percent tariffs on all Canadian and Mexican goods starting March 4.

The tariffs were originally scheduled to take effect on February 4, but Trump postponed them for 30 days after a phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Both countries have said they will retaliate if Trump follows through on his threat.
