For three days, nearly 150 participants at the 59th Munich Security Conference—more than 45 heads of state and government, as well as 83 foreign and defense ministers—discussed Ukraine and the threats of Russian authoritarianism. World leaders have come to the conclusion that Ukraine needs to be given all possible potential to fight for its independence as soon as possible, FREEDOM reports.
“Yes, everyone said that Ukraine must win, and it is necessary to accelerate the supply of weapons so that it wins this year, so as not to drag out the conflict. In form, if you look at the conference, for the first time it was held without representatives of Russia, and the conference was opened by the President of Ukraine. That is, the form clearly shows what kind of conference this is, the face of this Munich conference, the President of Ukraine opens it, but there is no Russia at the conference, and everyone says that Russia is a war criminal, and Ukraine needs help to win. Here is such a short summary,” said international expert, Ukrainian diplomat Ruslan Osypenko.
During her speech, US Vice President Kamala Harris delivered an important message, experts say. According to her, the war criminals of the Russian army should be punished for committing crimes against humanity on the territory of Ukraine. And there is enough evidence for this.
“Russian forces are perpetrating widespread and systemic attacks against civilians — horrific acts of murder, torture, rape and deportation. Killings in the form of executions, beatings and electric shocks. The Russian authorities forcibly deported hundreds of thousands of people from Ukraine to Russia, including children. They ruthlessly separated the children from their families. I appeal to all those who committed these crimes and their leadership, which is an accomplice in these crimes – you will be held accountable,” said Kamala Harris.
“This is a politically important statement that actually drew a line under such an intermediate stage, where we see the emergence of infrastructures that, after the war, will make it possible to hold accountable the entire military-political leadership of Russia, which unleashed this imperialist war. In fact, we can say that the West is unanimous that the military-political leadership of Russia should be responsible for unleashing a war in the 21st century in Europe,” Osipenko is convinced.
Partner countries should accelerate the production of ammunition for Ukraine.
“I think now is the time to really speed up production and scale up the production of standardized products that Ukraine badly needs. For example, standardized ammunition – it cannot be that we wait months and years until we can replenish, until we can deliver it to Ukraine, ”said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called on world leaders to increase military support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He recalled that the Russian war against Ukraine called into question the security and sovereignty of every nation. In turn, EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell stressed that just talking is not enough.
“Zelensky and the Ukrainians have a lot of applause and few patrons. This is a paradox. They need to be applauded less and better armed. Ukrainians are fighting, paying the highest price with their lives, but this war takes place on European soil, affects us and has global consequences around the world, which also affects our security,” Josep Borrell said.
During the Munich Conference, the prospects for Ukraine’s accession to the EU were also discussed.
“Let’s be honest about the fact that the EU did not expect until recently that Ukraine would actually become a member of the EU and NATO. Ukraine, by its actions, has really shown that it not only proclaims European values, it is ready to defend them, and people are ready to die for it,” Osipenko said.
At the Munich Security Conference, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba held more than 10 talks, including with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Head of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China Wang Yi. He also met with the G7 foreign ministers. According to Dmitry Kuleba, the main topics of the talks are accelerating the supply of weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the introduction of new sanctions against Russia.
