The US Department of Justice Requests to Close the Case Against Trump on Election Interference
“The Department and the country have never faced a situation like this, where a federal indictment against a private individual was issued by a grand jury, and a criminal prosecution was already underway when the defendant was elected president,”
– stated Smith.
He added that following internal consultations, the Department of Justice determined that the previous policy of not prosecuting sitting US presidents “applies to this situation and that, as a result, this prosecution must be suspended until the defendant’s inauguration.”
Donald Trump reacted to the dropping of charges against him.
“These cases, like all the others I have been forced to endure, are baseless and illegal, and they should never have been brought,” the Republican wrote.
According to him, the Democratic Party spent $100 million on these cases, and thus on their fight against him, yet he still prevailed.
