The United States has warned that Iran is likely to be able to develop fissile material used in nuclear weapons within one to two weeks.
This was announced by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado.
“Instead of being at least a year away from a breakthrough in the ability to produce fissile material for a nuclear weapon, [Iran] is now probably a week or two away,” he said.
According to the official, after the collapse of the so-called nuclear deal, Tehran has made progress in its nuclear program in recent weeks and months. At the same time, Blinken noted that the country has not yet developed nuclear weapons.
Against this background, the Secretary of State noted that the United States maximized pressure on Iran in all directions. In particular, more than 600 sanctions were introduced.
In February 2023, the IAEA found that Iran had enriched uranium to 84%—just 6% less than needed to build a nuclear weapon. Tehran denies this. Inspectors are currently determining whether Iran did it on purpose or whether this concentration occurred by accident.
