The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced new sanctions against Iran due to its decision to transfer ballistic missiles to Russia.
The new U.S. sanctions list includes ten individuals and six legal entities from Iran and Russia, as well as four vessels used by Tehran to supply weapons to the Russian side, including drones.
Additionally, the U.S. imposed further restrictions on Iran’s flagship airline, Iran Air, to limit its ability to operate internationally.
At the same time, the State Department added three organizations, including Iran Air, to its sanctions list and ordered the seizure of five vessels involved in the transfer of Iranian weapons systems to Russia.
“Iran has chosen to deepen its involvement in Russia’s illegal war, and the United States, along with our partners, will continue to support Ukraine,” commented U.S. Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo.
The U.S. Treasury Department noted that during the summer of 2024, Russian military personnel were trained to use Iranian ballistic missiles, and the first batch was received by Russia in early September.
Iran has been supplying Russia with combat drones but had until recently refrained from offering more powerful weaponry, likely due to warnings from the U.S. and Europe that this would trigger a wave of painful sanctions.
Earlier on Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that Iran had transferred ballistic missiles to Russia for use in Ukraine, making new sanctions against Tehran inevitable.
