At the request of Russia, Ukrainian director Yevhen Lavrenchuk was detained in Italy. It happened on December 17, but the detention became known only the day before.

This was reported by  UA.

Yevhen Lavrenchuk has already been remanded in custody by the Naples court pending detention pending extradition to Russia.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a comment to the Dom TV channel that Lavrenchuk was assisted by the Consulate General of Ukraine in Naples. On December 31, the director was visited by the consul.

“With the assistance of the Consulate General, the citizen was provided with a lawyer. The consuls and a lawyer are currently working with Italian law enforcement to find out all the reasons for the detention of Yevhen Lavrenchuk and to protect his legitimate interests. The consuls keep in touch with the administration of the penitentiary institution and relatives and keep the case under special control” – said Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleh Nikolenko.

The mother of the detained director hopes that Italy will not extradite him to Russia. Iryna told Radio Svoboda about this. According to her, until 2014 her son worked in Moscow, at the Polish Theater, which he created. But with the start of hostilities in the Donbas he returned to Ukraine.

Iryna Lavrenchuk last spoke with her son on December 15, when he was returning from Tel Aviv to Lviv via Naples. He was detained there at the request of Russia.

“He did not go to Italy on purpose. Fly from Tel Aviv to Lviv with a change in Naples. I know that my son is supported by the Ukrainian consulate, there is an Italian lawyer. As the consul told us, Eugene is in a fighting mood. I could not imagine the situation that happened to him. I am waiting for my son to return to Ukraine, I am waiting for Italy not to extradite him to Russia” – said the mother of the detained director.
