During a briefing, U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller commented on Vladimir Putin’s visit to Mongolia, stating that the U.S. urges countries not to provide the Russian leader with a platform to promote his war of aggression.

Miller emphasized that the U.S. believes no country should give Putin a platform to advance his aggressive war against Ukraine. He stressed the expectation that Mongolia will adhere to its obligations under the UN Charter, including the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, and communicate globally that these principles must be upheld.

Miller also acknowledged the difficult position Mongolia is in, being situated between two much larger neighbors, and noted that the U.S. plans to continue supporting Mongolia. However, he underscored the importance of Mongolia upholding its international obligations and making clear to Russia that it supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Putin’s visit to Mongolia on September 3 marked his first visit to a state party to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) since the court issued a warrant for his arrest in March 2023, related to the abduction of Ukrainian children.
