Polish Defense Minister, Wojciech Kosiniak-Kamysz, stated that he does not agree to transfer a new batch of MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine because they protect Polish airspace.
He said this to Radio Zet.
The head of the Ministry of Defense, Kosiniak-Kamysz, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, emphasized that Poland has sent Ukraine as much military equipment as it could, but its own security is the limit.
“For example, the MiG-29s – they patrol Polish airspace, they serve Polish pilots. I cannot say that I agree with the transfer of the planes. There is no consent from me on this,” said the Polish Defense Minister.
In response to a question about the recent statements of President Zelenskyy regarding aid to Ukraine, Kosiniak-Kamysz said that Zelenskyy is “doing everything possible to ensure that interest in the Ukrainian issue does not fade.”
“Of course, it would be easier for him if other countries participated in this war, but Poland is not in conflict,” said the Deputy Prime Minister of Poland.
In July, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Poland might consider transferring additional Soviet-model fighter jets to Ukraine if it could find replacements for them in cooperation with allies.
Later, Polish Defense Minister Wojciech Kosiniak-Kamysz rejected President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s calls to expedite the transfer of MiG-29s to Ukraine, citing the same argument.
In September, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that Warsaw could transfer additional MiG-29 jets to Ukraine, but this depends on whether Poland has enough resources to protect its own airspace.
