The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant must be under the control of Ukraine to ensure the fulfillment of all IAEA recommendations.
The Minister of Energy of Ukraine, German Galushchenko, announced this during the broadcast of the Yedyni Novyny’s telethon.
“The IAEA mission must state that the presence of the military and weapons at the station is a real threat to nuclear safety. This is obvious,” German Galushchenko emphasized.
He noted that the mission had taken place on the initiative and at the invitation of Ukraine.
“This mission is rather unique because there are no analogs in the history of the IAEA at all. Missions took place at objects that were controlled by states. But there was no such mission format as it is now. The IAEA can rise to another level by assessing such significant violations of nuclear safety,” said the Minister.
According to him, the specialists of the mission, who will stay at the station for several days, should assess the actual situation at the plant and provide detailed information and recommendations on ensuring nuclear safety.
“The part of the mission that is currently staying in the station will be key. It is planned for it to stay there for 3-4 days. We have a lot of shared approaches to the technical issues that need to be evaluated at the station. IAEA specialists recognize the violation of the key fundamental principles of nuclear safety due to the actions of the occupiers,” German Galushchenko said.
“Recommendations and reports of the IAEA should be sent to Ukraine, the operating organization of the ZNPP – Energoatom. And we must implement these recommendations, and eliminate the consequences of barbaric actions of the occupiers. But for that, we need to have access to the station. It should be returned under the control of Ukraine,” the Minister emphasized.
