The German Ambassador to Ukraine, Martin Jaeger, stated that in his opinion, Germany would support Ukraine’s NATO membership if all other allied countries were in favor of it.
He made this comment during a discussion at the NV event “Ukraine 2050: Dialogues on the Future,” as reported by “Interfax-Ukraine.”
The Ambassador emphasized that Germany’s position is crystal clear: Ukraine’s future lies in NATO.
“There are no debates about this. Ukraine’s future is in NATO and the EU. And personally, I believe that EU membership also requires NATO membership because it must be integrated into a reliable security architecture. We have questions about the concept of an invitation to NATO because, honestly, we don’t quite understand what it means,” he said.
He also noted that “everyone here agrees that there will be no NATO membership while the war is ongoing.”
“So we are talking about a time after the war. But the path to NATO is very clear, and we need to follow this path,” he added.
However, Jaeger pointed out that a “more interesting question” is what will happen once the war ends or some kind of settlement occurs. “This must be backed by security guarantees, either NATO membership or bilateral security guarantees.”
“This is something we need to keep in mind and work on. As for everything else – let’s wait and see. But my very personal opinion is: I think that if all others agree that there should be something like an invitation to NATO, Germany will support it. But let’s wait and see how this discussion develops,” the Ambassador emphasized.
It is known that Germany and the United States are among the countries that do not support Ukraine’s invitation to NATO in the near future.
Recently, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz dismissed the possibility of inviting Ukraine into NATO, which is the first point of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s “victory plan.”
However, as previously reported on October 22, Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that Berlin has softened its skepticism regarding Ukraine’s NATO membership.
