The fifth round of sanctions against the Belarusian regime was approved by the European Council.

UA reports this.

The decision was published in the Official Journal of the European Union. According to the document, the new restrictions will apply to 17 individuals and 11 legal entities. High-ranking officials of the Lukashenko regime and the ‘Belavia’ air carrier are on the sanctions list. The sanctions will also apply to tour operators and hotels that organized the illegal crossing of the Belarusian border by migrants and thus helped to use them for political purposes.

“The European Union does not recognize the deliberate and politically motivated use of people by the Lukashenko regime. The cynical strategy of exploiting vulnerable people is a terrible attempt to divert attention from violations of international law and fundamental human rights and freedoms by the Belarusian regime. The EU is united in countering this challenge and will use all possible means to counter attempts to create crisis situations on its borders. We stand in solidarity with the people of Belarus. And the fifth package of sanctions is another proof of our readiness to act when human rights are violated” – the European Commission said in a statement.
