The EU is already talking to us about accelerated procedures for Ukraine’s accession, – Stefanishyna

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Olga Stefanishyna believes that European partners are ready for a special approach in the negotiations regarding Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

According to Stefanishyna, who is responsible for Ukraine’s European integration and heads Ukraine’s negotiating team, mechanisms to accelerate integration are already being discussed in meetings with European partners.

“At every meeting, I hear two questions — whether we accept the full scope of EU law and whether we need accelerated integration procedures,” she said.

Stefanishyna emphasized that the question of readiness to implement the entire EU acquis, or EU legislation, is standard in negotiations with candidate states, as the EU side needs to ensure this, understand where transitional periods may be needed, and so on.

“But regarding accelerated integration — this is something new. We initiated these conversations some time ago, and now the EU side is asking us about it,” she explained.

Stefanishyna also noted that she sees this as the EU’s readiness to adapt these procedures, as the first steps toward acceleration are already happening.

In particular, the EU is prepared to depart from its rules regarding the sequential progression through all stages on the path to membership.

“Unlike the standard approach, we are doing everything in parallel,” she explained.
