The request for additional aid, put forward by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, was supported by the conservative CDU/CSU and the Free Democrats. MPs from the ruling SPD abstained.
This was reported by Reuters.
“The MPs called on Finance Minister Jörg Kukis to approve the allocation of an additional €3 billion in military aid for Ukraine. Usually, the ministry satisfies requests approved by the committee,” the article says.
In 2024, Germany allocated €8 billion in aid to Ukraine. In the 2025 budget, the amount has been halved, as the German government is counting on a $50 billion loan approved by the G7. However, according to Spiegel, about half of these funds cannot be used to purchase weapons.
Earlier, Spiegel reported that a dispute had allegedly arisen within the German government over an additional arms package for Ukraine worth around €3 billion.
Later, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius denied claims that Chancellor Olaf Scholz was blocking the additional package for Ukraine.
However, Scholz himself stated that he opposes increasing planned military aid to Ukraine if it requires cuts to other budget items.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock criticized the government for its indecisiveness regarding aid to Ukraine, emphasizing that “Germany as a whole is currently not seen as a driving force of peace policy in Europe.”
