Germany today, May 8, remembers all the victims of German National Socialism. Memorial Day in Germany, celebrated on the anniversary of the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht and the end of World War II in Europe, is a “quiet” date. This is a working day, without mass events. TSN correspondent Natalya Fibrig told about this live on the FREEDOM TV channel.
According to her, on this day politicians lay flowers at the memorials to the victims of the war. This will also happen in Berlin today. Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Aleksey Makeev has already stated that he will not go to Soviet memorials, in particular the Tiergarten memorial, but will lay flowers at the Neue Wache (German Neue Wache) – the main memorial to the victims of war and tyranny in Germany, located in the Berlin district of Mitte on the street Unter den Linden.
As Natalya Fibrig said, the central figure of this memorial is a mother with her dead son, on which rays of light fall through a hole in the dome on sunny days, and droplets of moisture fall on rain and snow.
“Unbelievable, as shown by the grief of a woman who lost her son. This is very close to the Ukrainians now, because every day on the battlefield against Russia, our defenders pay the highest price, ”commented the journalist.
She also recalled that since 2014, Ukraine has founded in Berlin the tradition of honoring the memory of Ukrainians who died in World War II, with the involvement of representatives of other countries.
“On May 8, a large delegation gathered, politicians, government representatives, other ambassadors came, and together with Ukraine they remembered all the Ukrainian victims of National Socialism and what Ukraine did to liberate Europe, and this is a huge role,” said Natalia Fibrig.
In the evening in Berlin, Ukrainian activists will hold a funeral march in memory of all Ukrainian victims of the war. It will pass, in particular, by the former factories and factories, where Ukrainian Ostarbeiters worked during the Second World War.
Natalia Fibrik also commented on the conflict around the use of Ukrainian and Russian symbols in Germany on May 8 and 9. She noted that this situation is very non-complementary for the German police, which put the symbolism of the victims of aggression and the aggressors on the same level. Today, the use of this symbolism has already been allowed by the court, but regarding the symbolism of the Russian Federation, it is disputed, in particular because of the permission to use the so-called St. George ribbons, since this is an unambiguous symbol of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
“During today, we are waiting for a decision on whether or not it will be possible for the Russian victorious people to carry their flags, St. George ribbons,” the journalist noted.
In addition, it is known that an action of “Night Wolves” – Russian and pro-Russian bikers – is planned in Germany.
“These will not be the same wolves that travel around Moscow, they will not be allowed here: they are under sanctions. But here there are migrants from Russia who have been holding German passports for a long time, they can change clothes these days, get on a rented German BMW motorcycle, drive to the monument and show how cool they are. This victory will surely come. But I wonder how the German court will decide: what they can carry. There will definitely be a huge number of police nearby. Will Ukrainian activists go there? The Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany urged not to do this,” said Natalia Fibrig.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he was submitting a bill to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, which proposes to establish May 8 as the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945. On May 9, starting tomorrow, Ukraine will annually celebrate Europe Day. Earlier, on May 8, the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation was established in Ukraine, on May 9, the Day of Victory over Nazism in World War II was celebrated. European Day was celebrated by Ukrainians separately from Europeans – on the third Saturday of May.
