President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia’s defense ministry is preparing various responses if the United States and NATO allies support Ukraine in launching deep strikes within Russia using Western-supplied long-range missiles.

The ongoing Ukraine war, now in its third year, has led to the most intense standoff between Russia and the West since the Cold War. Russian officials warn that the conflict is entering its most perilous phase.
For weeks, Russia has cautioned the U.S. and its allies that allowing Ukraine to target Russian territory with Western missiles would be seen as a significant escalation. On Sept. 12, Putin asserted that such support from the West would signal “direct involvement of NATO countries, the United States, and European nations in the Ukraine war,” as NATO infrastructure and personnel would be essential in coordinating these missile strikes.
While Putin noted it’s too early to determine Russia’s exact response, he emphasized that Moscow would respond appropriately, with several options under consideration. “The (Russian defense ministry) is evaluating potential responses to long-range strikes on Russian territory and will propose various measures,” Putin told state TV’s lead Kremlin correspondent, Pavel Zarubin.
As Russia advances in eastern Ukraine at its fastest pace since the early days of the invasion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been urging the West to allow Kyiv to strike deeper into Russia with Western-provided missiles.
