Teaching Teachers: Ukrainian National Guard Leads Weapon Safety & First Aid Training Courses

Instead of a classroom, a simulated battlefield. The Ukrainian National Guard alongside their colleagues from Latvia, are holding training courses for teachers of military lessons in Ukrainian schools. The classes are held outside, despite frost and wind.

“Participants of the training come to me, receive ammunition, sign, then instructors check everything. And then the participants go back to the training ground.”

The ammunition magazines are empty. According to the instructors, the main goal of the training is not learning to shoot, but learning to handle weapons carefully.

Ukrainian National Guard officers also demonstrate techniques of psychological training.

This falling exercise teaches trust in one’s colleagues. And this standing one – teaches support and mutual assistance.

Volodymyr Lysachenko is a teacher with military experience. Before the war in eastern Ukraine, he taught history. Then, Volodymyr spent two years on the front line. Now, he teaches students to defend their country.

“It would be interesting to hold tactical medical training for students. There are many different standards. Students learn how to provide aid. Our task is to teach students to help themselves and others. Not only in the military sphere, but in civilian life as well.”

The National Guard will also hold trainings for teachers from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. In the future, they plan to train teachers across Ukraine on a regular basis.

“In addition to handling weapons, we are teaching topography, tactical medicine, protection against weapons of mass destruction, and communication. “
