“Any suggestion that allies will not defend each other undermines all of our security, including that of the US, and puts American and European soldiers at increased risk. Any attack on NATO will be met with a united and forceful response,” NATO’s Secretary General stated in a written statement which follows Trump’s claim he “would encourage Russia” to attack those NATO allies who pay less.
Stoltenberg expressed his profound hope that “the U.S. will remain a strong and committed NATO ally” regardless of who wins the presidential election.
Some European officials have also reacted to Trump’s speech. The German Foreign Ministry reminded everyone of the NATO’s motto “One for all and all for one” and posted it with a hashtag #StrongerTogether on its X account.
“NATO’s motto ‘one for all, all for one’ is a concrete commitment. Undermining the credibility of allied countries means weakening the entire NATO,” Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz also emphasized on the concept of the NATO alliance.
Trump’s claims concerns Article 5 of the NATO treaty. It says that an armed attack against any alliance member will be considered an attack against them all, triggering collective self-defense.
