German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is ready to hold talks with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin on a “fair peace.” The German politician made this statement in the Bundestag on Wednesday, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

In his traditional government address ahead of the EU summit, Scholz spoke in favor of peaceful diplomatic negotiations involving Russia to end the war in Ukraine and expressed his willingness to hold direct talks with Putin.

“If the question is whether we will also talk to the President of Russia, we say: yes, we will,” the Chancellor said, while assuring that “decisions must never be made over Ukraine’s head.”

In his view, negotiations with Putin should take place in coordination with the closest partners.

According to Scholz, the time has come, in addition to strong support for Ukraine, to also do everything possible to understand how to ensure that this war does not last forever. It should not be that “an incredible number of men and women continue to die in Ukraine, becoming victims of Russian bombs and missiles,” he said.
