US Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker made the US mission to help Ukraine defend itself clear at a press conference in Washington D.C. The event was devoted to assessing the impact of sanctions on the Russian economy and foreign policy.

Meanwhile The Committee on Armed Services of the House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress has proposed allocating $250 million to help Ukraine in the defense sector next year.

Kurt Volker also added that Russia is trying to divide Europe. Due to this, restrictions and pressure against the Kremlin must be strengthened.

He also noted that the sanctions pressure on Russia would continue until it returns the Crimean peninsula to Ukraine. According to him, the “Crimean” package of sanctions against Russia was a clear message: “Going into another country, taking territory, and annexing it is simply unacceptable, and we are not going to agree to that.”

According to Ukrinform, in late March of this year, President of the United States Donald Trump signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act, which was approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives for the fiscal year 2018. According to the law signed, the Pentagon allocated $200 million in military and technical assistance to Ukraine, which is $50 million more than in 2017. The total volume of assistance to Ukraine stipulated in the document was determined at $620.7 million, which exceeds last year’s corresponding estimate.
