Russian-Backed Militant Who Guarded MH-17 Crash Site Detained

The Officers of the State Border Service of Ukraine detained a man who was a member of the Russian-backed forces in Donbas and served as one of the guards of the wreckage of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 which was shot down by a Russian missile, the press service of the SBSU reported.

“He served as a member of one of the paramilitary units of the militants. Fulfilled the tasks of the Russian mentors serving at illegal checkpoints in the Shakhtarsky district of Donetsk region, where he became a witness to numerous crimes and acts of the humiliation of the civilian population,” the report said.

In August 2014, he guarded the crash site of the Boeing 777, collected fragments and belongings of the deceased and handed them over to the Russians and their supporters.

The national police filed a criminal proceeding under the allegation of the participation of illegal armed forces. He faces a sentence up to eight years of imprisonment.
