Russia’s Lavrov arrives in New York for UN Security Council meeting

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has arrived in New York to chair the to chair the meetings of the UN Security Council presided by Russia.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it on X.

“We should ask simple but concrete questions about everything else the West is blaming on us to send the ball back to their “court,” Lavrov said.

It should be noted that when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the U.S. imposed sanctions against the top Russian official, including freezing Lavrov’s assets and a a travel ban.

“As the top diplomat representing Russia on the world stage, Lavrov has helped facilitate Russia’s aggressive actions against sovereign states and enabled Russia to degrade democracy globally,” U.S. Treasury stated on February 25, 2022 as it imposed sanctions against Sergei Lavrov.

Still, on July 16, 2024 Russia is presiding in the UN Security Council and Lavrov freely attends its meeting in New York.

On July 1, Russia took over the presidency of the UN Security Council and became responsible for international peace and security while continuing its aggressive war in Ukraine.

On February 25, 2022, Russia vetoed a draft UN resolution condemning the invasion of Ukraine.
