Russia’s false accusations of Ukraine in alleged preparations for the use of the so-called “dirty bomb” may be caused by Russia’s problems with nuclear blackmail. This opinion was expressed by the head of the sector of the National Institute for Strategic Studies Oleksiy Izhak on the air of the FREEDOM TV channel.
“One can only watch and observe what kind of madness this is and why they are telling this crazy story. My own take on the subject is that Russia has some sort of problem with nuclear blackmail. Well, firstly, they no longer believe in him, and secondly, perhaps, as part of the latest exercises that they conducted, some kind of poor technical condition or some other problems were revealed that do not allow them to further convincingly blackmail the world nuclear weapons. Therefore, such an information operation was created about the fact that there are other species that are equivalent in scale, ” – Izhak believes.
He stressed that Russia is well aware that Ukraine definitely does not have such an amount of nuclear material that can be used for a “dirty bomb”.
“The only place where you can find such an amount of material is a nuclear power plant … The only station on the territory of Ukraine that is not now fully controlled by the IAEA is the Zaporizhia plant. There is really a lot of fuel there, a very large dry storage, huge canisters under 200 tons stand in the open sky for their satellites to see … The only place where you can take such a quantity of materials secretly, imperceptibly, is the Zaporozhye station, which is now controlled by Russia. But in general, the technical implementation is very doubtful,” – Izhak said.
The expert also recalled the voiced warnings that if Russia uses weapons of mass destruction in Ukraine or something equivalent to this, then a collective response from NATO will follow.
“The result will be the same: the scale of assistance, or rather, the type of assistance, even, it will change dramatically, and Ukraine will receive something more substantial, which will lead to the defeat of Russian troops in Ukraine. Therefore, after all, Russia is looking at it. What we can do is, of course, respect and provide opportunities for full transparency… The main thing is to insist that the mission that is at the Zaporizhia station be expanded and, possibly, demand that those stations in Russia where material that is close to Ukraine can be extracted so that the IAEA inspectorate still checks what is happening there with both storage facilities and training nuclear fuel, ” – Izhak is convinced.
In his opinion, it is necessary to look at the statements of the Russian Federation rationally and understand that now Russia is doing “such a reality show in which there are more informational provocations than any real actions.”
Earlier, the Ukrainian authorities invited UN and OSCE monitoring missions to the country to make sure that Russia’s accusations were false.
