What Response Can the World Expect From Russia?

Empty rhetoric or concrete threat? Hard to say. Never has the world find itself in a situation where a western coalition defied Russian clear warnings before, even in Cold War times. Escalation has always been avoided in the past thanks to heated yet fruitful diplomatic discussions.

The situation today has three western nations launching a joint military surgical strike against a regime that Russia is currently helping – but will a military strike causing no casualties push Moscow to retaliate in a tit-for-tat reaction to the risk of triggering a world conflict? This is the main question.

The Kremlin has already summoned an emergency meeting of the United Security Council of the UN, which might give the world an idea of what kind of response the Russians are willing and ready to give.

It must be noted as well that “consequences,” as stated by the Russian government, is a term open for interpretation. Even though a military response is the first thing that comes to mind, Russia also enjoys a particularly strong energy leverage over western powers that it could decide to use, rather than making the situation escalate towards a military confrontation.

What is certain is that the next 48 hours will be crucial to see what the Kremlin decides to do next.
