Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will try to reach agreements in any future peace talks to end the war that will make it impossible for Ukraine to join NATO. The Financial Times writes about this, citing a senior Kremlin official and a source who has discussed this issue with Putin.
Putin’s key goal is to revise the international order in such a way as to “eliminate any threats to Russia.” According to the source, the dictator is also seeking to get the US-led NATO to refuse to conduct certain operations on the Alliance’s eastern borders.
“He wants to change the rules of the international order so that there are no threats to Russia. He is very concerned about what the world will look like after the war. Trump, in turn, may seek to roll back NATO. The world is changing, anything can happen,” the source said.
The publication also reports that European leaders are actively persuading US President-elect Donald Trump and his administration to continue military assistance to Ukraine. This is necessary to strengthen Kyiv’s position in possible peace talks and to put pressure on Moscow to engage in diplomatic solutions.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and other Western officials emphasize the importance of a “peace through strength” strategy that will not allow Kyiv to fail. They warn that any success for Putin could embolden his allies in China, Iran, and North Korea. Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Putin was supposedly ready to meet with US President-elect Donald Trump, but that this requires “political will.”
