The decision of the European Union to provide Ukraine with grant support for the purchase of 30 million LED lamps to replace outdated incandescent lamps will reduce energy consumption throughout the country and help balance the system. This was stated by First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yuliia Svyrydenko during a live broadcast from Paris on the air of the National Telethon.
“We welcome the EU’s decision to support our idea to reduce energy consumption. Yesterday we were informed that our grant application for the purchase of LED bulbs has already been approved. This may not seem like a rather serious tool to some people, but in fact, it gives an opportunity to save 7% to 10% of electricity to the power system and balance it. The Government is currently developing an algorithm for the implementation of this program,” said Yuliia Svyrydenko.
According to the First Deputy Prime Minister, the technical task of the Government is to make the process as simple as possible. It is expected that every person over 18 will have the right to exchange 5 outdated lamps for 5 new LED lamps free of charge. This will allow the country to save up to 1.5 gigawatts of electricity during peak loads. According to Ukrenergo’s estimates, this measure is comparable in efficiency to the transfer of the largest industrial consumers to night shifts.
The Government is currently finalizing the mechanism to simplify the process as much as possible in order to change a large number of light bulbs across the country as soon as possible. The implementation of the program will start in the cities with the highest load on the energy system – Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro, and will then expand to the whole country.
Details of the program will soon be announced by the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine.
