The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) prioritizes cases against Russia filed by other states, according to ECHR President Marko Bošnjak.
Bošnjak emphasized that inter-state cases against Russia receive maximum attention to ensure swift review and resolution.
“These cases are handled with priority and receive our full attention,” he stated, though he noted that it’s impossible to predict when specific decisions will be finalized, including whether any will conclude in 2025.
Currently under review at the ECHR are the following inter-state cases against Russia:
- Ukraine v. Russia (regarding Crimea) – decision on the merits already issued.
- Ukraine and the Netherlands v. Russia (regarding the Donbas conflict and MH17 downing) – hearings have taken place.
- Ukraine v. Russia (regarding political opponent killings within Russia).
- Ukraine v. Russia (Kerch Strait incident).
- Georgia v. Russia – decision on the merits issued; fair compensation pending.
Bošnjak highlighted that the ECHR remains the “only international judicial body currently holding Russia accountable for human rights violations and fundamental freedoms.”
Notably, the ECHR continues to process cases against Russia despite Moscow ceasing all cooperation with the court since March 2022.
