Poroshenko & Putin Discussed Political Prisoners Saturday

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone on Saturday and discussed prisoners being held in each others’ countries, the Ukrainian president’s office said in a statement.

 

 

Poroshenko placed particular emphasis on Ukrainian citizens being held in Russia who are on hunger strike, the statement said. One such political prisoner, currently being held by Russia is Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian film director, who’s been on hunger strike since May 14th. Sentsov is demanding the release of all Ukrainian political prisoners and has said that he is willing to die for his cause. Since starting his hunger strike, other Ukrainian political prisoners have also declared hunger strikes.

 

 

Rallies have been held around the world in support of Sentsov.
