Poland approves free military assistance to Ukraine

February 8, the Polish Government adopted a resolution on the free transfer of military equipment to Ukraine’s Armed Forces. The press office of Polish Council of Ministers reports about it.

“Poland stands in solidarity with Ukraine amid the threat posed by Russia. The government wants to support its eastern neighbor by providing military equipment free of charge,” reads the statement.

The official statement does not specify, which military equipment would be transferred. However, last week, Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki stated that his country was ready to transfer tens of thousands of shells and artillery ammunition, “Piorun” anti-aircraft system, light mortars, reconnaissance drones, and other defensive weapons.

“Piorun” capacities include hitting targets at a distance of up to 6,500 meters and at an altitude of up to 4,000 meters, which is enough to engage any Soviet or Russian-made combat helicopter.

Amid the growing threat of a new Russian invasion of Ukraine, US eight planes delivered several hundred tons of weapons and ammunition to Kyiv. Earlier, 2,000 anti-tank weapons were sent by the UK. In February, Canadian armed forces delivered a batch of military assistance to Ukraine.

In addition, the Czech Republic has assured its readiness to provide Ukraine with 152 mm caliber ammunition for heavy artillery. The Baltic states also plan to transfer weapons, including Javelin anti-tank missile systems and Stinger portable anti-aircraft missile systems. Netherlands and Denmark do not exclude the supply of weapons to help Kyiv in deterring Russian aggression.

As reported before, the first batch of US soldiers arrived in Poland with the bulk of the contingent to follow. It is planned to send nearly 3,000 extra troops to Poland and Romania to shield NATO eastern flanks.
