Biden authorizes Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles on Russian territory.
This was reported by The New York Times.
Two months before the end of his term, U.S. President Joe Biden has, for the first time, allowed Ukrainian forces to use long-range ATACMS missiles for strikes within Russian territory, The New York Times reports, citing American officials.
According to sources, the missiles will likely first be deployed against Russian and North Korean troops in Russia’s Kursk region.
Officials explained that the decision to approve the use of these Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) was a response to Russia’s move to involve North Korean forces in its war against Ukraine.
The NYT notes that Biden began relaxing restrictions on the use of American weapons following Russia’s offensive toward Kharkiv in May.
As part of this shift, the U.S. had earlier authorized Ukraine to use HIMARS rocket artillery systems, with a range of approximately 80 kilometers, to target Russian forces on Russian soil.
