Number of nuclear power units to be built in Ukraine using Westinghouse technologies has increased to 9

June 2, in the presence of the Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sweden to Ukraine Tobias Tiberg, the President of Energoatom Petro Kotin and Westinghouse Electric Company President and Chief Executive Officer Patrick Fragman signed 3 agreements on strengthening cooperation.

According to German Galushchenko, the agreements concluded between Energoatom and Westinghouse are another powerful step towards Ukraine’s energy independence and carbon-free future.

Thus, the number of NPP power units to be built using AP1000 technology in Ukraine will be increased from 5 to 9. These are new generation reactors with the best performance in the industry and the ability to operate in maneuvering mode.

“We will modernize our fleet of nuclear power units, which will produce clean, safe and reliable energy without any russian influence. In the future, Ukraine may become a key exporter of electricity to Europe, “the Minister stressed.

An agreement was also reached to increase the supply of American nuclear fuel for the needs of all Ukrainian nuclear power plants. It is a question of providing fuel to the existing power units and those which will be constructed in Ukraine within the limits of cooperation. The fuel will be supplied from the Westinghouse production site in Sweden. At the same time, the production of fuel assembly components will take place in Ukraine on the basis of one of the separate divisions of NNEGC Energoatom.

In addition, the companies confirmed their intention to establish the Westinghouse Engineering and Technical Center in Ukraine, which will support the construction and operation of AP1000 power units in Ukraine, as well as the future decommissioning program of Ukrainian NPPs.

“We consider the establishment of a powerful Westinghouse engineering and technical center with Energoatom in Ukraine as a trust and recognition of the high level of domestic nuclear science, qualifications of Ukrainian nuclear engineers and a strong foundation for Ukraine’s nuclear energy development for decades to come based on modern technologies. I am confident that we will justify this trust. I thank our American partners for many years of fruitful cooperation and reliable support of Ukraine during the war, “German Galushchenko said.

Background

Currently, the Ukrainian power system has 15 operating nuclear power units at 4 nuclear power plants.

With the start of the war in February 2022, Ukraine completely abandoned russian nuclear fuel.
