Nuclear Build-up

Nuclear states are increasing their funding for weapons. This is according to the annual report of the  Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

According to the document, the overall number of nuclear weapons in the world is decreasing. However, countries continue to modernize and expand their arsenal. Around 92 percent of the world’s nuclear weapons are possessed by two countries, the United States and Russia.

Satellite photos of Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic coast, show that a nuclear bunker appears to have recently been upgraded according to an analysis of the images by the Federation of American Scientists.

The director of the nuclear information project, Hans Kristensen said that these photo show it is “an active site”, but he didn’t confirm the presence of nuclear weapons.

Since last year, Russia has been beefing up its nuclear arsenal, on the backdrop of tensions with the West.
