The new double track Beskydy railway tunnel will be finally opened by the end of May, informed prime minister of Ukraine, Volodymyr Groysman.
According to Groysman, the tunnel is an important logistical component of export routes to the European Union, therefore he insists that “we must provide export assistance so that we will not have problems with the supply of products.”
According to Ukrzaliznytsia or the Ukrainian railways, the new two-track tunnel will allow 96 pairs of trains to pass through per day. The current single-line tunnel only allows for 25 trains a day to pass through.
The length of the tunnel is more than 1,700 meters. Work started in 2013. It is built with all the requirements of the region and meets the highest European standards.
The Beskydy tunnel is a railway tunnel through the Carpathian Mountains, and is a part of Lviv Railways. It is located next to Volovets Pass. The tunnel was built back in 1886, and with time, its passing capacity became inadequate, so a decision was adopted to build a new one.
The second tunnel is being built parallel to the existing tunnel, which will accommodate two tracks and allow speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour. The new tunnel will have a length of more than 1,800 meters.
