The issue arose following the arrest of a Serbian official by Albanian police on March 26th. Marko Djuric, head of the Serbian government office on Kosovo, was arrested during a roundtable between Serbia and kosovo, a move meant to help fulfill Serbia’s conditions for becoming a member of the European Union.

Serbian President Aleksandr Vuchich had a strong response on the matter: “We will not swallow that. All who participated in the kidnapping of Marko Djuric, all who took part in the beating of Djuric and other Serbs will be held responsible in front of Serbian state bodies, including two people of Serb nationality who assisted Albanian terrorists with the logistics of kidnapping of Marko Djuric.”

Vucic said the Kosovo police’s use of force and the detention of Djuric amounted to a quote “brutal provocation and the worst criminal act”, while calling on Serbs in the north of Kosovo to remain calm.
